In 2018 I undertook a Vision Quest, which consisted of three days and nights alone in the woods, without shelter or food. During these hours alone with myself, surrounded by raw nature, I was deeply aware of internal transformation. This sense was so powerful that I was convinced it must be visible externally in my face and body.
Since that time, I’ve often wished I had a photographic record of my own experience. This desire led me back to the woods, this time to photograph ten women before and after their own Vision Quest. Their first photograph was taken the day before they began their Quest – when they carried water to their chosen site in preparation for their time out alone. Their second photo was taken immediately after their return. To record this manifestation of transformation confirmed for me what I felt in my own Vision Quest – change really can move from inside out.
